‘Tis the season to watch Christmas classics and this is truly a great one! With the distinguished voice of Boris Karloff telling the Whoville story of How the Grinch Stole Christmas, this is one I can watch over and over. It’s funny how when you remember the show it was an long as a movie, and when you watch it as an adult it’s over in 20 minutes.

2012

I am going to see the movie 2012 right now. I will be back in a few hours to give you my take on it.

OK. I liked it! The special effects were awesome! Now some friends of mine said they didn’t like the movie because it doesn’t have a plot and the main characters are graced with too much luck to find the movie at all plausible. But I did remind them that this is a MOVIE made by Hollywood for entertainment, and it was entertaining. They have to have a “hero” or someone that you follow and root for during the movie so that you have an emotional attachment to the character and care what happens to them. I did get attached – especially when they throw in the kids, but found myself more tense during the disastrous scenes than with the drama of the people. The enormous tsunamis were incredible to watch and I found them scarier than the volcanoes. I was curious to see what exactly would happen and how they could possibly save humanity. Their solution of super “Noah’s Arks” was impressive and makes me wonder about government, but in the case of possible total world destruction – anything can happen.

Definitely a movie to watch on the big screen to appreciate the special effects. The one thing I kept thinking was ‘how cool would this movie be in 3D? And I also enjoyed Woody Harrelson’s performance as the crazy-guy-in-the-know and found it uncanny how much he looks like my roommate.

Surrogates

I recently watched “Surrogates” a sci-fi movie with Bruce Willis as the star. It was an interesting concept to me. People had resulted to using a ‘surrogate’ or robot of their ‘perfect self’ or a ‘perfect someone’ (since your surrogate does not have to be a direct reflection of you, you can be anyone -from male to female) to live their lives. The actual real people never left their homes and instead were always wired to their systems to control their surrogate selves. The robots did everything – their daily jobs, errands, etc. It seems almost silly to imagine our society becoming like this but 20 years ago we would never imagine ourselves tied to our laptops and cell phones as we are now. This same type of concept, I believe, was also displayed in the movie “Gamer”, but I think they wired actual people to be controlled by the person playing the game. So I wonder, how far away is the possibility of this happening?

The Jungle Book

To switch gears, I recently watched Disney’s “The Jungle Book” again. It is the story of a young boy, Mowgli, whose life starts in the heart of the jungle rescued by wolves. As Mowgli grows older the animals of the jungle decide that he should go to the ‘man-village’ where he belongs – but he refuses. The story continues as the boy meets and meets animals and a tiger whom he has to fight for his life on his journey to the village. Along the way he learns “The Bare Necessities” of life and the true meaning of friendship. Of course in the end, Mowgli is seduced into the village by a young woman.

The movie is full of fun songs with catchy beats. This is the last animated film to receive Walt Disney’s personal touch. I happen to LOVE animation and I do like musicals – so I love this movie! It’s a classic that the whole family can enjoy.

Hellraiser, Hellbound: Hellraiser 2

Ok, I mean really? I am starting to totally rethink my fear of scary movies. I actually think that Hellraiser is more of a love story – a warped one. It is basically about a woman that takes on a lover, he is dead-ish and being tortured but trying to come back, and she will do ANYTHING to help him. For him to come back and become a real fully functional person again he needs to kill people and I guess suck the life out of them to regenerate himself. So his lover, Julia, tricks men into coming home with her for some hanky-panky and there Frank kills and “eats” them. It did have some bloody scenes but nothing too shocking or scary. The whole time I was waiting to see Pinhead, the master of evil and gang leader, and you only see him for about 5 minutes of the whole movie. I assumed the movie was about him and he would be featured throughout but that was not the case.

The second movie Hellbound: Hellraiser 2 was a continuation of the first story. Julia who dies in the first movie is resurrected by some weirdo doctor and his silent puzzle patient that opens and closes the box. They run around trying to close the gates of hell and fend off crazy Julia who seems to become the queen of evil. For me the movie was kind of confusing as far as following a plot. I guess I would need to watch them again to catch everything. But in the end, not really scary movies.

Zombieland

ok. So this is my first blog that I need to set up for school. I picked movies as my subject.
I am usually not a scary movie person but I decided to go and watch one anyway since they said it was more of a comedy. I went to see “Zombieland”. It was alright. It wasn’t scary so much as silly. The film stars Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, Emma Stone and Abigail Breslin trying to survive in a world that is filled with zombies. The rambling on of Jesse Eisenberg’s character reminded me of actor Michael Cera who starred in “Year One” and “Superbad”. Woody’s character has an affection for Twinkies and Bill Murray which was funny. I think the most “nail-biting” part of the movie was waiting for the girls to be rescued from the amusement park as the zombies were closing in on them. So to sum it up I say “yay” to entertaining and “nay” to being scary.
